Italian soft wheat flour exports rose 14.83% to 202,654 tonnes in the first half of 2026, with US demand surging 38.42%. Latest ISTAT data point towards year-end exports approaching 400,000 tonnes.
According to the latest data from ISTAT (the Italian National Institute of Statistics), the positive trend in Italian soft wheat flour exports is firmly established, reinforcing expectations that shipments could reach the 400,000-tonne mark by the end of the year. The figures were confirmed by Italmopa-Associazione Industriali Mugnai d'Italia, the Italian Association of Millers.
The United States emerged as Italy’s leading export market following a 38.42% increase in exports during the first half of 2026. It moved ahead of France, where exports grew by 9.22%, Germany, which recorded an increase of 11.11%, and Spain, where shipments rose by 23.1%.
The Italian milling industry attributes its performance to the careful selection of high-quality wheat, regardless of origin, combined with its milling expertise, advanced techniques and ability to meet the specific requirements of premium international market segments. These include pizzerias and high-end patisseries, where flour quality and consistency remain important considerations.
The industry's focus on quality, milling technology and innovation has helped position Italian soft wheat flour as a premium ingredient in international markets. Its products also serve as an ambassador for authentic Italian food culture, strengthening the industry's presence across global food markets.
These factors underpin the industry's positive outlook, with the combination of technical expertise, product quality and the ability to meet specialised requirements expected to remain central to its international performance in the coming years.
